The show airing this Wednesday, Christmas Eve is: Jesus Christ – a Yoga Guru – Nayaswami Asha
Virtually all spiritual teachers receive their knowledge from a teacher, who himself has a teacher. In the east, the teacher is often called “guru”, or dispeller of darkness. In the west, the teacher is usually called Master. The series of teachers is known as a lineage. Paramahansa Yogananda, one of the first great Masters from India to make his home in the West, expressed in his writings that two Masters in his lineage are guiding the spiritual development of the world. He was referring to Shankaracharya and Jesus Christ, who, he felt, sent him to the West with the commission to restore the original, mystical teachings of Christianity, and to show their unity with the traditional teachings of the East. He emphasized the importance of inner, spiritual communion with God, which in modern Christianity, has been given less importance than outward service to others. In Yogananda’s conceptualization of the spiritual map of the world, Jesus was a Yoga Guru. Is there truth to this affirmation….? To answer this question I invited today Nayaswami Asha , welcome Asha…
Nayaswami Asha is a lifelong disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, and has studied for more than 40 years with Yogananda’s direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda, the founder of Ananda Sangha, a global spiritual community based on Paramahansa Yogananda’s teachings. She has devoted her life to bringing spiritual understanding to herself and others through teaching, counseling, and writing. In 1987, Swami Asha and her husband, Swami David, became spiritual directors of Ananda Palo Alto in California.
Swami Asha is author of Ask Asha: Heartfelt Answers to Everyday Dilemmas on the Spiritual Path, Swami Kriyananda As We Have Known Him, Loved and Protected: Stories of Miracles and Answered Prayers.
Most people know Yoga, yet what’s most popular is the Asanas, the aspect of Yoga that deals with the Body. Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ and it means ‘union’, basically the union between Body-Mind-Spirit and utlimately everything that exists.
YogiViews is a TV show where Antonio Sausys interviews Yoga itself, through interviewing those who practice it, teach it, sell it or simply love it.
The interviewed range anywhere from great Masters deeply rooted in lineage and tradition to self made teachers; from savvy business men (and women!) who’d made a fortune selling yoga as a product, to those street-smart that know to rub the hands when cold in winter; from those who renamed yoga to make it acceptable, to those loyal to no other name than Yoga…
The format is either a half or a full hour show that at times presents a clip, or a real person, sometimes all in studio, others all outside, sometimes guiding practical experiences, others immersing in words…, but always true to Yoga.
The audience is everyone, those who practice can learn more and demystify old beliefs and those who don’t can learn why it works; those who love it can learn more about why they love it and those who don’t can learn to love it…, bottom line: Yoga represents the ‘Whole’, therefore ‘everyone’ is touched by it, including You!
Yoga has been around for 6000 years, despite trends, prohibitions and even modern standardization! Why is it…, how does it work…, who are those who pass it on…? Stay tuned and watch YogiViews to find out! The show airs at Comcast Channel 26 or AT&T Channel 99 (San Francisco Bay Area, California) on Tuesdays at 8:30 pm PST (repeat on Wednesdays at 11:30 am PST)
